Dear guest, welcome to METAPONTO!

METAPONTO is situated between the Bradano and Basento, on the Ionian Coast of Basilicata, a region in the South of Italy. Metaponto was founded by the Achaeans, a Greek population of Peloponneso, abouth the 8th-7th century b.C. It acquired great splendour thanks to the fertility of its soil, as the ancient Metaponto coin; reproducing the image of an ear of wheat, shows. The ancient Greek colony of Metaponto gave hospitality to Nestore and Pitagora, who died in the forum of the Muses. Metaponto was also the epicentre of the battles between Greece and Rome and between Hannibal and the Romans. The "Tavole Palatine" are the evidence of the ancient splendour of Metaponto: they consist in 15 columns, which represent what  remains of the original 32 columns that formed the Doric temple dedicated to Hera, dating back to the 6th-5th century b.C. In Metaponto, you can also visit the National Museum, famous for the beauty and the rarity of its archaeological finds and the Apollo Licio's park, dating back to the 7th century b.C., where you can see the ruins of the foundations of four temples. But Metaponto isn't just an important historical and archaeological resort; it is also a famous seaside resort, characterized by wide expanses of golden beach,
crystalline water and hot sun. Metaponto's plain , also called "the California of South", is today the hub of Basilicata's economy. Here you can taste the unmistakable excellence of the famous and healthy Mediterranean cuisine.
